Jo spent a good deal of her childhood in Indonesia and West Malaysia (then Malaya). After completing secondary school in the UK she read German with Theology at Bristol University.

Following 2 years of further theological study she lived for 4 years in East Malaysia in a multi-ethnic environment where Malay (Bahasa Malaysia) was the language of daily communication.

Back in the UK from 1980 onwards she was employed first by an export company, for whom she translated contracts and technical documents from German to English. Then for 15 years she worked as a VAT Audit Officer with HM Customs & Excise. More recently she was Personal Assistant to the Bishop of Hereford. Within and alongside these posts she built up a flow of translation work, visiting Germany and Austria whenever possible to maintain a knowledge of the language and culture.

In 2008 she became an Associate of the Institute of Translation & Interpreting (AITI), and has since been enjoying life as a full-time freelance translator, working from German, Malay and Indonesian into her native English.

A month in Malaysia in 2011 gave the opportunity for 2 weeks intensive Malay study at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang, at the end of which she was a delegate at the 2011 Seminar on Translation of South East Asian Languages (TranSEAL) at USM.

In May 2014 she completed the MITI qualification and became a fully-certified member of the ITI. This was a proud achievement and she is delighted to have been awarded this professional accreditation of her skills as a translator.

Forty years of experience as a linguist, during which she has worked for private individuals, religious organisations, commercial enterprises and the public sector, have equipped her to be a careful and competent translator, committed to turning work around fast and in full and sympathetic compliance with instructions from a wide range of clients.
